Access date error
[edit]I don't know how to fix this, or I would. As I type, today is May 29, 2009. The access date shown for footnote [1] is 2009-23-08 as shown here: "^ "History". Scripps National Spelling Bee. http://www.spellingbee.com/history. Retrieved on 2009-23-08". By any system of dating with which I am acquainted, this cannot be. Could the "08" be a typo for "05"? The contest was run this month. // BL \\ (talk) 12:12, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
- Probably supposed to be May. I've fixed it. Matthewedwards : Chat 15:42, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you. // BL \\ (talk) 15:54, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
1926 Winning Word
[edit]In some sources, the winning word is cerise, but in other sources, the word is abrogate. Which is correct? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.93.161.26 (talk) 19:51, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
- What sources do you have for abrogate? http://www.spellingbee.com/champions-and-their-winning-words say it is cerise, but we can put a footnote if we have a reliable source for any other word, as we did with the 1927 and 1929 winning words. Matthewedwards : Chat 21:03, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
Check out this link www.wattpad.com/2989-national-spelling-bee-winning-words, which claims the word abrogate to be winning word. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.92.180.200 (talk) 13:33, 17 June 2010 (UTC)
Redirecting problem
[edit]There is a problem with redirecting with the latest winner, Anamika Veeramani. When you click on her name, it redirects back to the same page. May somebody fix this? 02:40, 3 June 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.16.9.223 (talk)
Add ages, etc. to the table?
[edit]I would be interested in seeing some additional information about the contestants in the table, including:
- age at time of competition;
- grade level;
- sex (one can tell from most names whether the contestant is a boy or a girl, but not in all cases);
- name of school or home-schooled.
If that seems to be too many table columns maybe the sponsoring newspapers' names and locations could be combined into one column.

1932 winning word corrected
[edit]I noted that the 1932 winning word was not "knack", as that was the winning word in 1928, not albumen as had been listed there. Found that winner in 1932 was "invulnerable."[1]. Have made these corrections, but it appears some newer published sources may have some errors in their lists, so there may well be other errors on this list.--Milowent • hasspoken 19:02, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
- To update this comment above I posted last year, sometimes newspapers report the second-to-last word as the winning word (i.e., correctly spelling the word that the 2nd place finisher missed), failing to mention the final word. This confused me on the 1935 bee today, which I corrected back to the original word (intelligible) and not "interning" though some press reports said that was the winning word.--Milowent • hasspoken 15:43, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

Long sentence
[edit]The compound sentence in the intro, in regards to the recent dominance of Indian-Americans, is ludicrously long and cumbersome. I'm not in an editing mood today but I'd like to point that :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1.126.48.153 (talk) 08:21, 5 June 2017 (UTC)

"national" & relation to U.S. territories
[edit]The U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and Guam are all part of the U.S. To suggest that the name of the competition being a "national" competition is in conflict because of the inclusion of these American territories is offensive. It is akin to the recent political rhetoric or the U.S. President questioning Puerto Rico as being part of the country. This section should be corrected to reflect reality instead of perpetuating the common misconception and false notion that the territories are not part of the "nation". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.117.213.202 (talk) 03:40, 3 June 2019 (UTC)
2019 winners
[edit]The way it is worded in the 26 August 2019 "From today's featured list," it reads as if the 2019 competition was prematurely ended.
If so, why?
Or am I misreading the last sentence? 2600:8800:784:8F00:C23F:D5FF:FEC4:D51D (talk) 03:48, 26 August 2019 (UTC)
